Brooklyn green space project

Welcome to the Coastal Disturbance Ecology Lab’s Brooklyn Greenspace Project site! If you have scanned a QR code on one of our temperature or water level loggers located at 20 different parks and 4 community gardens across Brooklyn, you are in the right place. 

Our project aims to measure the social and environmental benefits of urban green spaces. We have placed environmental loggers for temperature and flood monitoring to detect fine-scale differences between varying types of green areas. This data also tells us about any excessive heat and flooding issues in your local greenspace. In addition to these devices, we also have community surveys available for each green space to assess the social use and value.

What are these loggers collecting information on?
  • These loggers are collecting environmental data only. They are temperature and water level loggers which measure changes in ambient temperature and pressure associated with flooding. 

What is the difference between a temperature logger and water level logger? 
  • Temperature loggers collect data on temperature solely, so these have been placed in areas where there may be different variables (i.e. sunlight or green areas) affecting the ambient temperature. Water level loggers collect both temperature and pressure data, sensing any changes related to flooding. These are placed on the ground in predicted flood zones.

​​Why is there a device in a tree?
  • Our loggers have been placed in a range of areas within each park, from heavily covered and pervious spaces (i.e. a heavily forested area) to sunny and impervious spaces (i.e. a basketball court). This range of areas allows us to collect information on fine-scale heat or flooding differences within each green space. 

​Can I remove them? 
  • No. Please do not touch, move, or remove our environmental loggers. These have been placed in specific areas to gather the best data possible on the environmental benefits of these greenspaces, and this data is vital to greenspace management and conservation. 

​How long will these be here?
  • This study will be completed by the end of summer 2026. We will be removing these devices from park areas before the winter of 2026. 

​How can I get involved?
  • If you’re able, please complete our short, anonymous survey about your experiences in this green space. Your answers will help inform the connections between humans and our built natural environments. The links to these surveys are above. Please only complete one survey per park, and you must be 18 years or older to participate. 

​How can I access the results of this study?
  • At the end of this study, we will share our findings with local park managers, community garden groups, and non-governmental organizations associated with these areas. If you want to learn more, please contact us!
